For the first time in two years we went on a flight. We decided to go the farthest you could go with out leaving the U.S. Hawaii. We stayed at the island of Maui also called The Valley Isle. It was surrounded by mountains.
We arrived at the resort at about 5:30 pm Hawaiian time. The resort was very nice. It was mainly an open plan which means that it was open to the outside a lot. The view of the beach and pool was also very nice. They also gave us nice seashell necklaces to wear when we first came in.
It was also the first vacation in two years that we didn’t wear masks! On day one we arrived just in time for the cliff dive, a traditional Sheraton Maui Resort custom in which a person lights all the tiki torches and then jumps of the black rock cliff and into the water. We ate food at the cliff dive restaurant. I ate a really good pork sandwich. By that time I was so sleepy that we didn’t even watch a TV show before going to bed.
The next day was full of fun. We first went into the pool which was designed as a lazy river. This means that it would wind around under bridges and around restaurants until it looped back. If you wanted to you could even get a drink in the pool from the cliff dive restaurant which Amma Baba did! It was very fun. When we went to the beach the waves were huge and they kept pushing us. I had to hold Baba’s arm to be not pulled out by the undertow! We also saw a turtle that got pulled in with the waves! It was so cool! Before going to dinner I played Baba in chess and won! Then we went for dinner to a place called Monkey Pod Kitchen at Whaler’s village which was a nice walk along the beach.
Day two started with Amma waking me up at 2:30 to go and see the sunrise. We went to the top of one of Maui’s mountains which used to be a volcano. We were above the clouds and it was super cold! The sunrise was nice though. The mountain was called Haleakala which means “House of the Sun”. Later we got pineapple from a local shop. I had been wanting to eat pineapple from Hawaii for a long time. We went snorkeling in the evening at a different beach and we saw another turtle!!! Then we went into the pool before going to dinner.
On day 3 we started snorkeling at a beach called Baby Beach. It was by far the best beach for snorkeling that we went to. We saw a turtle and a lot of coral and fish!!! At lunch Amma and Baba tried Hula pie while a really kind waiter gave me ice cream with chocolate since I couldn’t have nuts. We didn’t even ask for it but the ice cream was nice! We went to a town called Lahaina and saw the biggest banyan tree in the U.S. We got a souvenir from a shop and then left. We saw a large Buddha statue by Baby beach and there was a mango tree near it!
Day 4 was a road trip down the road to Hana. We only went 3/4th way there though. It was super beautiful with nice rest stops. There were supposed to be 600 hair pin turns and 50 bridges on the road! The first few stops on the road were on water falls. We tried to swim but it was too cold for us. The next stop was half way down the road to Hana and it was called Ke’anae peninsula and there was aunty Sandy’s banana bread place. They ran out of banana bread but we got good sandwiches for lunch. We ate out by this place called the Ke’anae Peninsula where the waves hit the black rocks that were made by volcano explosions. It was very cool. While coming back we stopped at the same local shop as last time and purchased delicious guava, mango, and pineapple bread. We then had dinner at a place called Mala.
On Friday we snorkeled at the Kaanapali beach which was where our resort was. We saw two turtles and Baba saw a third that was super huge! One of the turtles even came out of the water.
In the evening we went to a luau which is a traditional dance and feast. We were also asked to dance so we did a bit. They talked about Maui the demigod and did a dance about him and other parts of their history. They also had a fire dance that was super cool and reminded me of Star Wars. Watch the video.
On the last day it was raining which was okay because we left that day. The trip was great and I would gladly go there again and again like my cousins. Look at the photo album!
