Mexico City

The day after Christmas, we went to Mexico City. We did many things in Mexico City but there were some that stood out for me among the others.

One of the best parts of the trip was eating at Masala y Maíz. This is an Indian, East African, and Mexican restaurant meaning that it has flavors from all of those places. An example of this is the paratha quesadilla which was a quesadilla that was made with paratha instead of tortillas. There were also dishes such as baby chicken in sweet potato sauce which was really good. Masala y Maíz is also a Michelin restaurant so their service was as good as the food. In my opinion, the food that we had there was the best food we had in Mexico.

Another highlight for me was the Xochimilco boat tour. Xochimilco is a town in Mexico in which a canal runs for many miles. All of Mexico City was built on top of a lake but in this town, you can still see part of the lake allowing you to go on a boat there. The people who live there use boats for almost everything, transportation, tours, and mini markets on the water. The boat tour took us along the lake letting us see how bright and busy it was. There were over 100 boats on the canal and we were always bumping into other boats. This was fun though as we got to see what it was like to be there on a busy weekend when locals come to party too and it looked very colorful because of all the boats. During the tour, we also got to stop at an animal sanctuary to see axolotls. These are animals that are like salamanders and they can regrow limbs and body parts if they lose them. These animals are only found in Mexico city and in this lake.  At the sanctuary, we also saw pythons and other huge snakes and were asked if we wanted to hold them. We all didn’t want to though but I held a hedgehog instead. Another part of the tour was making our own guac with avocados and salsa. This was very fun and I liked the guac i made a lot. Finally, they also let me try and pole the boat but it was very difficult and I didn’t do a very good job. Our tour was very good but if you want to do one, you will have to choose the tour type as some of these tours are party boats that only involve drinking and dancing.

My final highlight was the Teotihuacan pyramids. These were pyramids that predated both the Mayans and the Aztecs. My favorite pyramid was the pyramid of the sun which was a huge pyramid that was extremely impressive. There was also a smaller pyramid called the pyramid of the moon. Finally, we saw a pyramid called the feathered serpent pyramid which we were allowed to climb up using their steep stairs! One of my favorite parts of that day was also the restaurant close to the pyramids.  We went to a restaurant called La Gruta which was a restaurant inside a huge volcanic cave! The whole restaurant was lit by candles and at the end of our meal, they gave us our own candle to make a wish and place near a small crevasse in the cave. The whole experience was great, even though it was over 90 degrees Fahrenheit at the pyramids itself.

Those were my highlights and recommendations for Mexico City. There were also some amazing churro places and restaurants that can be found in the photo album. In conclusion, I greatly enjoyed Mexico City and can’t wait to go again!  Here is the link to the PHOTO ALBUM
